Why is it necessary to have a certified coder?

At MEREM Healthcare Solutions we know the importance of having trained certified coders. So much so, we have in-house classes and training courses for employees. These courses keep coders educated on guideline changes and develop new coders to become CPC certified. Finding experienced certified coders isn’t an easy task. Our coders work with physicians across the United States. We worry about keeping up with changing guidelines while physicians focus on their patients.

Why should your practice have a Certified Coder?

Experienced certified coders are considered experts when it comes to profitability and compliance. Most physicians forget the threat of an audit and how it can break a practice if compliance and coding guidelines aren’t practiced.  In this day and age, the fines or penalties for non-compliance is a huge threat to keeping a practice running.

Coders are well versed in guidelines. This means they know how to correctly code diagnosis (ICD-10) and procedure codes (CPT), getting you paid faster. In order to become a certified coder, they must take and pass a complex five hour and forty minute exam. Furthermore, CPC’s are knowledgeable in rigorous evaluation and management rules, surgical coding, bundling rules, and documentation guidelines. This is beneficial to all physicians because working with a certified coder has been known to reduce denials, improve compliance, and improve revenue.

Healthcare Changes

The healthcare industry changes daily. The American Academy of Professional Coders has estimated that by the year 2022, the demand for certified professional coders will have increased by 22 percent. This increase is because as healthcare evolves the need for certified coders will as well. In summary, your practices bottom line will suffer without experienced certified coders.
